DPO AS A SERVICE

The outsourced DPO office, on an ongoing basis

For those who must appoint a Data Protection Officer or strengthen the one they already have: a function staffed all year round, not consulting in fits and starts.

The GDPR requires several controllers and processors to appoint a DPO, and the role does not end with a formal act. The DPO must be involved in every significant processing activity, oversee compliance, and act as the point of contact with the authority and with data subjects. Outsourcing it means having a senior function always operational, without the cost and constraints of a dedicated internal role. I take on the appointment or support the DPO already in place, enter the organisation's processes and keep the documentation aligned as processing evolves, so that compliance is demonstrable at any time, not reconstructed in an emergency.

WHO IT IS FOR

Who it is for

The service is designed for the companies and bodies required to appoint a DPO, for those processing data on a large scale or handling special categories, and for organisations that already have an internal DPO but want to support them with senior expertise on the most complex matters. It also suits those who are not formally required to appoint one but choose to address the matter seriously.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

When does a company have to appoint a DPO (Data Protection Officer)?

Appointing a DPO is mandatory where processing is carried out by a public authority, where the core activity requires regular and systematic monitoring of data subjects on a large scale, or where it consists of large-scale processing of special categories of data. Outside these cases the appointment is optional, but it is often the more prudent choice. The first step is to check whether and how the obligation applies to your organisation.

What is an external DPO or "DPO as a service", and when is it better than an internal one?

An external DPO is a professional who takes on the Data Protection Officer role from outside the organisation, with the same duties and the same guarantees of independence as an internal one. It makes sense when a dedicated full-time internal role is not justified, or when you need senior expertise and continuity that a part-time internal role cannot ensure. You pay for the function, not the structure.

Who can act as DPO, and what requirements or certifications are needed?

The GDPR requires the DPO to have expert knowledge of data protection law and practice, proportionate to the complexity of the processing. It does not require a mandatory certification, but qualifications such as a DPO certification, documented experience and management-system auditor credentials attest to suitability. What counts is genuine expertise and the absence of conflicts of interest.
